Pool Age and Local Habitat Are Associated with Effective Number of Breeders in Spotted Salamander Populations Colonizing Created Vernal Pools

چکیده

Population genetics can reveal whether colonization of created habitats has been successful and inform future strategies for habitat creation. We used genetic analysis to investigate spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) vernal pools explored the impact characteristics on diversity connectivity pools. Our first objective was examine structure, differentiation, diversity, potential a founder effect. second determine if were associated with effective number breeders, relatedness, or diversity. sampled larvae in 31 (1–5 years old) Monongahela National Forest (WV) May June 2015 2016. The youngest exhibited effect, low breeders. Effective breeders positively pool age, vegetation cover, diameter, sample size. Vegetation cover also negatively relatedness. Genetic did not have strong environmental predictors. results indicated increased differentiation decreased within 4–5 creation, sign rapid population establishment. research showed that higher vegetative larger diameters could quality should be incorporated into

Critical Thresholds Associated with Habitat Loss for Two Vernal Pool-breeding Amphibians

A critical threshold exists when the relationship between the amount of suitable habitat and population density or probability of occurrence exhibits a sudden, disproportionate decline as habitat is lost. Critical thresholds are predicted by a variety of modeling approaches, but empirical support has been limited or lacking. We looked for critical thresholds in two pool-breeding amphibians that...

A resistant-kernel model of connectivity for amphibians that breed in vernal pools.

Pool-breeding amphibian populations operate at multiple scales, from the individual pool to surrounding upland habitat to clusters of pools. When metapopulation dynamics play a role in long-term viability, conservation efforts limited to the protection of individual pools or even pools with associated upland habitat may be ineffective over the long term if connectivity among pools is not mainta...

Can Genetic Estimators Provide Robust Estimates of the Effective Number of Breeders in Small Populations?

The effective population size (N(e)) is proportional to the loss of genetic diversity and the rate of inbreeding, and its accurate estimation is crucial for the monitoring of small populations. Here, we integrate temporal studies of the gecko Oedura reticulata, to compare genetic and demographic estimators of N(e). Because geckos have overlapping generations, our goal was to demographically est...

Identification of Woodland Vernal Pools with Seasonal Change PALSAR Data for Habitat Conservation

Woodland vernal pools are important, small, cryptic, ephemeral wetland ecosystems that are vulnerable to a changing climate and anthropogenic influences. To conserve woodland vernal pools for the state of Michigan USA, vernal pool detection and mapping methods were sought that would be efficient, cost-effective, repeatable and accurate. Satellite-based L-band radar data from the high (10 m) res...
